Notes: In 1911 the sister of Edward John Beatley, Martha Beatley, aged 51, never married, was working as a nurse at the London Hospital, Whitechapel in the east end of London (census reference: RG14/1497).
On census day 1911 the son of Edward John Beatley, Edward Reginald Beatley, aged 16, was employed as a farm worker for the farmer Samuel Nottingham Weaver at Brockhill Farm, Colwall, Herefordshire (census reference: RG14/15605).
At the start of the Great War, Edward Reginald Beatley was a farmer in Canada. He enlisted at Winnipeg on 14 December 1914 for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. On the application form his next-of-kin was named as his father Edward John Beatley of Castle Inn, Herefordshire; his birth date was stated as 19 April 1890 which would make him 24 years old. His real birth year was 1894. On the medical examination form his age on enlistment was stated more accurately as 20 years (Attestation Paper , Medical Exam , Soldiers of the First World War, Library and Archives Canada). Edward Reginald Beatley, a private in the 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry Alberta Regiment, was killed in action in a front line trench at Givenchy, France on 21 June 1915 (online memorial , Death Registers First World War, Library and Archives Canada). He is commemorated at the Vimy Memorial.
