Henry Whistler and Emily Susan, the daughter of Thomas White, a grocer of Newbury, Berkshire, were married at St Matthias Church, Stoke Newington, London, on 16 August 1868.

Notes: The name of Wellington House was a family tradition. Henry’s father John Whistler built a family home in Sherborne St John named Wellington Villas.
It appears that Florence was the daughter of Emily’s sister Harriet. Alfred Bradbury and Harriett Hedges White were married in Newbury in 1863 (website: FreeBMD). In the 1871 census, six-year-old Florence was living with her grandparents Thomas and Harriet White in Newbury, Berkshire.

In the 1891 census Henry and Emily’s son Henry Whistler, aged 20, was training as a carpenter’s apprentice in the Berkshire town of Reading. He was living as a lodger at 34 Weldale St, Reading (reference: RG12/993, folio 5, p. 3).

Notes: On the same census page, James Yates was listed as both Grocer and Postmaster of Silchester.
In the 1901 census the younger Henry Whistler, aged 30, was now a self-employed builder in the village of Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire where he was a lodger at Welders Farm (reference: RG13/1336, folio 22, p. 3).
