In 1861 George Whistler’s two younger sons, Walter (aged 13) and
Albert (aged 10), were pupils at the Salt Hill Grammar School in the
village of Farnham Royal in Buckinghamshire
(1861 census reference: RG9/854, folio 96, pp. 13–14).
Their seven-year-old sister Ellen was a schoolgirl at a small boarding
school in Church Street, Basingstoke. The census form gave Ellen’s
birthplace as Viables [Farm], Basingstoke

for Alfred Whistler on the farm at Cannon Heath for many years.
They came over to England from Galway, Ireland about 1848 – probably
because of the potato famine (information kindly provided by Susan Tall).

the 1891 census. However, it was possibly the same farm since,
for both the 1891 and 1901 census, Albert Whistler’s neighbour
