‘Typically to become a member of the livery company, a Haberdasher served 7 years as an Apprentice to a Master. At the end of the apprenticeship, the Apprentice became a Freeman and qualified to become a Master and employ other individuals’. People are listed in the records ‘with a variety of different occupations, not just haberdashers’. That is, a member of the Haberdashers' Company could practise any occupation.

The above records document that, in 1712, Newbrough Swingland started an apprenticeship with John Savage. When John Savage wrote his will in 1720, Newbrough Swingland acted as a witness. It appears that Newbrough Swingland took over the operation of the Rood Lane cork-cutter shop of John Savage.

An interesting item in the will is the statement about the design of the coffin.

The wills of Elizabeth Gimbert, probated 1788, and Richard Gimbert, probated 1802, give family connections. Richard was the nephew of Elizabeth’s husband.

The parish register of the ‘Collegiate Church of St Katherine by the Tower’ recorded the marriage on 19 December 1735 of John Gimbart [Gimbert], bachelor, and Elizabeth Swift, spinster.

A marriage record for John Hughes and Elizabeth has not been found. It appears that they were married before 1767 as John Gimbert Hughes, the son of John Hughes, caulker, and his wife Elizabeth was baptised 8 February 1767 at St Anne, Limehouse, Tower Hamlets.

Possibly, the testator Elizabeth Gimbert was born Elizabeth Dollinson.

Possibly, Richard was one of the sons of Richard and Jane Gimbert.
