William Whistler (1863–1940), born in the Hampshire village of Sherborne St John and educated at the University of London, had a professional career as a school master in England. With his wife and children he emigrated to Canada in 1903 and settled in the Vancouver area of British Columbia.

William’s nephew Laurence Whistler wrote that, at the Whistler family home of Wellington Villas in Sherborne St John, William ‘painted murals of a sort all round a room’ (The Laughter and the Urn, p. 3).

A gallery of selected paintings of William Whistler is displayed here.
